There are several different ways Mass Loaded Vinyl can be used on walls to block airborne sound between rooms. The most common installation method is installing Mass Loaded Vinyl behind the drywall, directly onto the studs. This allows for a finished room visually, and creates an ideal soundproofing assembly with drywall, MLV, and insulation.

That doesn't mean EnviroFlex™ MLV can't be installed on top of current drywall. One common method is installing Mass Loaded Vinyl on top of existing drywall, and then layering on another sheet of drywall, essentially sandwiching the MLV between the two layers of drywall. This method can increase the soundproofing of the overall assembly even more, as a second layer of drywall adds more mass to the overall structure, helping reduce sound transmission even more.

Regardless of the methodology used for installing MLV in walls, there are a few non-negotiables that are crucial to a successful install.
1. Make sure to use the proper fasteners. We recommend using screws (drywall / wood, based on your installation surface material) with large flat washers, or cap nails with a large washer head.
2. Always install directly into a stud or solid surface. Screwing directly into drywall, gypsum board, or other wall surface materials without attaching to the stud can lead to sagging material or damage to the wall.
3. Cover seams with seaming tape. Anywhere air can travel through, sound can also travel. Overlapping the seams of MLV when fastening, and then sealing with a seaming tape, will create the best soundproofing experience.
