1LB MLV installs as a retrofit over existing drywall — no demolition, no stud access required. In a standard wall assembly with batt insulation, it brings the wall to STC 41, where loud speech becomes muffled and barely intelligible.

1LB MLV (STC 26) — right for this application: STC 41 in standard wall assembly is the residential target. 2LB is rarely necessary for apartment shared walls — the additional mass and cost is hard to justify when 1LB achieves the required performance.

Typical recommendation1 LB MLV is the standard starting point for most residential wall projects. Use 2 LB when maximum mass or lower-frequency control is the priority.

Calculate total square footage and add material for seams and trimming.

Cut sheets or rolls with a sharp utility knife on a safe work surface.

Fasten securely

Support the material and fasten it to the assembly according to the installation method.

Seal seams and penetrations

Keep joints tight and seal gaps around seams, outlets, and penetrations.

Complete the assembly

Install the final finish layer while preserving sealed joints and perimeter details.

Mass works best as part of a complete assembly.

MLV adds mass, but overall performance also depends on framing, insulation, air sealing, decoupling, and finish layers. Treat STC values as assembly-level performance—not a promise from one material by itself.

Pipes & Ducts

Wrap noisy pipes and ducts with a layered barrier system.

Use MLV as the mass layer in pipe or duct lagging systems to reduce sound radiating through thin walls. Pair it with an appropriate decoupling or absorptive layer when the assembly calls for one.

Add mass to vehicle panels where road and drivetrain noise enter.

MLV is commonly used on floors, cargo areas, doors, wheel wells, and firewall assemblies. Fit pieces carefully so they do not interfere with seats, wiring, drainage, airbags, service access, or moving components.
