Most "soundproofing" products sold to homeowners — foam panels,
egg-crate padding, fiberglass batting — are actually acoustic treatments.
They absorb echo and reverb inside a room. They do almost nothing to stop sound
from traveling through a wall into the next room. That's a different problem,
and it needs a different material.
MLV solves the second problem. Layered over existing drywall, under flooring, or
wrapped around pipes and ducts, it adds the density sound waves need to lose
energy — measurably reducing what passes through, verified by third-party STC

Both weights block sound the same way - the difference is how much mass you're adding, and how much performance your project needs.
If your goal is muffling conversation, TV noise, or moderate household sound between rooms, 1LB delivers real, lab-verified results (STC 26) without the extra weight or cost of 2LB.
Twice the mass of 1LB, 2LB is the right choice when you're dealing with bass, loud media, or floor/ceiling assemblies where every extra STC point counts (STC 32).

Measure the wall, floor, van, or work area so you know the total coverage needed. Make sure to account for overlap and factor 10-15% more to account for scrap, mis-cuts, or overages.
Start by selecting from 1 LB or 2 LB MLV. 1 LB works for everyday noises, while 2 LB works best with deeper tones. Then, choose the size that best matches with your project need and handling ability.
Measure your chosen MLV and cut to the size you need for your project. Fasten the Mass Loaded Vinyl to the surface using fasteners or adhesive, making sure to overlap seams.
Complete your MLV install by using MLV seam tape to cover all seams in the material.
