WHAT ARE YOU SOUNDPROOFING?
Start with the space or noise problem. Use the recommendation to choose an MLV weight, product size, and installation path.

What Is Mass Loaded Vinyl — and Why Does It Work?
Sound doesn't stop because a wall is thick — it stops because a wall is dense.
Mass Loaded Vinyl is a flexible, high-density vinyl sheet engineered to do one
job: add mass exactly where you need it, without tearing out walls or floors.
Most "soundproofing" products sold to homeowners — foam panels,
egg-crate padding, fiberglass batting — are actually acoustic treatments.
They absorb echo and reverb inside a room. They do almost nothing to stop sound
from traveling through a wall into the next room. That's a different problem,
and it needs a different material.
MLV solves the second problem. Layered over existing drywall, under flooring, or
wrapped around pipes and ducts, it adds the density sound waves need to lose
energy — measurably reducing what passes through, verified by third-party STC
lab testing.

STC Ratings — What the Numbers Mean
Sound Transmission Class (STC) measures how much sound a material blocks. Higher is quieter. All EnviroFlex™ ratings are from third-party lab tests — not estimates.
| Material | Blocks sound? | STC gain |
|---|---|---|
| Acoustic foam panels | ✗ Absorption only | — |
| Fiberglass insulation | ~ Partial only | +1–3 |
| Extra drywall layer | ~ Some mass | +3–5 |
| 1LB MLV (EnviroFlex™) | ✓ Mass + decoupling | STC 26 |
| 2LB MLV (EnviroFlex™) | ✓ Maximum mass | STC 32 |
1 LB vs 2 LB Mass Loaded Vinyl
Both weights block sound the same way - the difference is how much mass you're adding, and how much performance your project needs.
1 LB Mass Loaded Vinyl
If your goal is muffling conversation, TV noise, or moderate household sound between rooms, 1LB delivers real, lab-verified results (STC 26) without the extra weight or cost of 2LB.
- Lower overall cost
- Easier to handle and install
2 LB Mass Loaded Vinyl
Twice the mass of 1LB, 2LB is the right choice when you're dealing with bass, loud media, or floor/ceiling assemblies where every extra STC point counts (STC 32).
- Higher performance
- More durable

A Simple MLV Project Workflow
Measure Your Space
Measure the wall, floor, van, or work area so you know the total coverage needed. Make sure to account for overlap and factor 10-15% more to account for scrap, mis-cuts, or overages.
Choose Your Material
Start by selecting from 1 LB or 2 LB MLV. 1 LB works for everyday noises, while 2 LB works best with deeper tones. Then, choose the size that best matches with your project need and handling ability.
Trim & Install
Measure your chosen MLV and cut to the size you need for your project. Fasten the Mass Loaded Vinyl to the surface using fasteners or adhesive, making sure to overlap seams.
Seal Seams
Complete your MLV install by using MLV seam tape to cover all seams in the material.
Complete Install
Complete your installation - finish with drywall, wood, paneling, flooring - and enjoy your space with your noise problem a thing of the past.
Common Questions Before You Start
Practical answers about choosing, sizing, cutting, and installing Mass Loaded Vinyl.
Still have soundproofing questions?
Use this area to point customers toward a guide, quote form, contact form, size chart, or installation resource.
What does Mass Loaded Vinyl actually do?
MLV adds dense, flexible mass to an assembly to help reduce sound transmission through walls, floors, ceilings, pipes, and vehicle panels.
Should I use 1 LB or 2 LB MLV?
1 LB MLV is the standard choice for many residential, vehicle, and pipe applications. 2 LB MLV adds more mass where maximum isolation and lower-frequency control are priorities.
How much MLV do I need?
Measure the total surface area, add an allowance for cuts and waste, then choose roll sizes that cover the project with as few seams as practical. Use the soundproofing calculator for a project estimate.
Do I still need drywall or another finish layer?
MLV is typically used as one layer within a larger assembly. Final construction depends on the application, code requirements, and the wall, floor, ceiling, pipe, or vehicle system being built.
