The core principles are similar—measure, cut, support the material, treat seams, and integrate it into the assembly—but the fastening and finishing approach changes by application.

WALLS

MLV Wall Installation

MLV is typically installed as a continuous barrier within the wall assembly. Plan the layout so sheets are fully supported and seams can be treated before the finish layer is installed.

Important: MLV is heavy. Use adequate support and fastening, especially with large sheets or overhead work.

CEILINGS

MLV Ceiling Installation

Ceiling installation requires extra attention to material weight and temporary support. Work in manageable sections and make sure fastening is appropriate for the framing and finished assembly.

FLOORS

MLV Floor Installation

For floors, MLV is commonly used as a continuous mass layer within a floor/ceiling assembly. The finished build-up must remain flat, supported, and compatible with the flooring system above it.

MLV is a sound barrier, not a replacement for impact-isolation underlayment when footfall or structure-borne impact noise is the primary concern.

PIPES & DUCTS

MLV Pipe & Duct Installation

For pipes and ducts, MLV is used as part of a flexible wrap or lagging system. The barrier should remain as continuous as practical while allowing safe access to service points and required clearances.

MLV Vehicle Installation

In vehicles, MLV can be cut to fit floor pans, wheel wells, doors, partitions, and other areas where added mass can help reduce transmitted road, drivetrain, and exterior noise.

Dry-fit each piece before final placement

Secure the material so it cannot shift or interfere with controls

Reinstall trim and verify access to fasteners, drains, wiring, and service points

Do not obstruct airbags, seat mounts, pedals, wiring service points, drains, ventilation, or other safety-critical vehicle components.

WALL INSTALLATION

Wall Installation — Step by Step

Install MLV as a continuous barrier layer with tight seams and adequate support, then complete the wall assembly using the planned finish layers.

Step 1

Measure and plan the layout

Measure the wall area, locate penetrations and obstacles, and plan sheet orientation so seams are minimized.

Place the material on a safe cutting surface and use a sharp utility knife with a straight edge for controlled cuts.

Position the MLV and secure it with the fastening method appropriate to the wall assembly. Keep the barrier flat and supported.

Treat seams and complete the wall

Keep adjoining edges tight, seal or tape seams as required, address penetrations, and install the planned finish layer.

Pro tip Small gaps can become sound paths, so inspect the entire barrier before closing the wall.

Installing MLV in a Vehicle

Use MLV on floors, doors, wheel wells, and interior panels where added mass can help reduce road, drivetrain, and panel noise. Maintain access to drains, fasteners, wiring, service points, and safety equipment.
